Knee Replacement and Knee Surgery

What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Total knee replacement surgery, also called knee arthroplasty, is surgery to correct knee pain and knee arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis and other knee joint problems.

During this joint replacement surgery, your orthopedic surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage and uses metal and plastic implants to resurface your knee joint.

Total knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgical procedures for treating chronic and debilitating knee pain that hasn’t responded to other therapies.

More than 540,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed annually in the United States, including 15,900 right here at Hackensack Meridian Health.

What are the Different Types of Knee Replacement Surgeries?

Our surgeons perform:

  • Total knee replacement
  • Partial knee replacement (“unicompartmental” and “patellofemoral”)
  • Bilateral knee replacement
  • Revision of a prior joint replacement
  • Robotic-assisted total knee replacement

What is Robotic Surgery for Total Knee Replacement?

Developed by international teams of engineers and surgeons, including three from Hackensack Meridian Health, robotic-assisted approaches offer several benefits over traditional total knee replacement:

  • Cuts in the bones are perfectly precise, allowing the surgeon to place the implant components in just the right position.
  • Uses X-rays or CT scans to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee to ensure the most precise implant fit.
  • The robot can be used to achieve exacting implant placement so that it mimics the patient’s anatomy, achieving a more natural-feeling knee. It can even reduce the need for additional surgery to correct or replace the implant.

We were also one of four health systems in the country to participate in a clinical trial for robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery to treat severe osteoarthritis. This FDA-approved system uses 3D CT scans to select the ideal implant and define the optimal implant placement and alignment based on your unique anatomy.
