A Safe, Simple Screening Could Save Your Life Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United States. If you are a current or former smoker, routine lung cancer screening could save your life by detecting lung cancer early — before it causes symptoms and when it is most treatable. Lung cancer screening performed with a low-dose spiral CT scan is safe and takes approximately five minutes. A CT scan creates detailed, 3D images of the inside of the lung to identify the smallest lesions not seen on X-ray.  Hackensack Meridian Health is designated as a Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance, signifying that our comprehensive Lung Cancer Screening Program follows the latest, evidence-based screening and treatment guidelines.

Who is Eligible for Lung Cancer Screening?

All private health insurance plans and Medicare cover lung cancer screening for patients who meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Current or former smoker who has quit in the last 15 years; 
• Between the ages of 50 and 80 years old;  
• No symptoms of lung cancer; and 
• Have at least a 20-pack-year smoking history, such as two packs per day for 10 years, or one pack a day for 20 years.
