Injury Prevention Programs

Provided by Hackensack University Medical Center

Trauma Injury Prevention focuses on reducing the risk of serious injuries through education, outreach, and advocacy. As community liaisons, we work closely with local partners, schools, first responders, and organizations to identify safety needs and deliver impactful programs. Our goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources needed to make safer choices and build stronger, injury-free communities.

We already offer a variety of programs focused on topics like falls prevention, pedestrian safety, helmet use, and more, and we're always looking to expand our impact. If you're interested in registering for any of the programs listed below—or have a unique safety need in your community—we welcome the opportunity to collaborate and develop tailored programming to meet those needs. Together, we can build safer, healthier communities.

Programs for All

Trauma offers fall prevention strategies across the lifespan by addressing the physical, psychological, and environmental factors that contribute to falls. From early childhood to older adulthood, trauma-informed care helps identify individuals at risk, promote safe mobility, and reduce fear of falling.

By integrating fall prevention into trauma care—whether in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or community programs—health professionals can improve recovery outcomes, enhance quality of life, and reduce the long-term impact of injury across all ages.

We promote pedestrian safety across the lifespan through engaging presentations, interactive games, and hands-on activities tailored to all age groups. Our programs are designed to educate and empower individuals to make safer choices on the road. In addition, we provide real-time information and critical resources to trauma patients, supporting their recovery and helping prevent future incidents.

What would you do if you came across someone who had a life threatening bleeding injury? Did you know that people can bleed to death in five minutes or less, long before professional rescuers arrive? Lives have been saved in our community by people who have used the skills learned in this course.

Free of charge for organizations inquiring to host the course. We can offer this in both private and community settings.

Share the Keys is a hands-on program for parents and their teen drivers, designed to boost safety on the road. It focuses on getting parents more involved in their teens' driving habits since research shows that supportive, rule-setting parents can help cut crash risks in half. The goal is to build safer driving practices through open communication and guidance.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. A major factor is reckless and distracted driving. And it's not just the teen driver who is killed — a passenger is just as likely to die. Yet, many teens don't realize the potential danger they face whenever they get behind the wheel. What Do You Consider Lethal? is an engaging campaign designed to help teens tackle the issue of reckless and distracted driving.

High School students are taught a Safety Curriculum. They teach these classes to students in an affiliated grammar school. This program has been developed by the RWJ Trauma Center in New Brunswick. We would work in collaboration with their program manager and your school.

Our Think Safe, Ride Safe program empowers local police departments with the tools and resources they need to promote bike and helmet safety among children. Through education, outreach, and community engagement, officers can share vital safety information and reward kids who are spotted wearing helmets and practicing safe riding habits. This initiative helps build trust, reinforces positive behavior, and keeps our communities' children safer on the streets.

Programs for Seniors

We offer fun, interactive, and educational programs to help older adults stay safe and independent. Our offerings include:

  • Falls Prevention BINGO
  • Jeopardy-style games
  • engaging presentations designed to raise awareness and promote healthy habits

We’re also proud to collaborate with the Wyckoff YMCA to expand our Falls Prevention outreach and support in the community.

Review of our Home Safety Checklist. We discuss anticipating situations that can lead to falls both in the home and in the outdoor environment. Tips are shared for reducing these risks.
