The goal of the general surgery residency program is to:
- Provide a comprehensive training program in general surgery, resulting in graduates capable of safe, competent independent surgical practice, and who, should they choose, can obtain the fellowship of their choice. The degree of clinical responsibility and technical operative experience increases incrementally with each year of training. Residents mature clinically, with their interpersonal skills and ultimately with technical ability. The application of knowledge in the treatment of surgical disease is for lifelong learning. Glenn S. Parker, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, site director of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Surgical Residency Program, and faculty have more than 20 years of experience educating general surgery residents. We will continue to maintain a strong affiliation as we incorporate the incoming PGY1 surgical residents into the resident rotation schedule.
The resident at the completion of training should be able to do the following:
- Pass the Qualifying and Certifying Examinations offered by the American Board of Surgery.
- Function independently and safely as a general surgeon.
- Critically assess the surgical literature.
- Develop the necessary tools so that graduates can have the career of their choice whether it be academics, private practice or additional surgical fellowship training.
Objectives of the Surgical Residency Program, in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Surgery are to:
- Provide the trainees with a broad based exposure to patients in the areas designated as the core areas for general surgery: surgical oncology, vascular surgery, trauma, critical care, endoscopy, endocrine surgery, abdominal surgery and surgery of the breast.
- Provide exposure to all trainees in the subspecialties of surgery, including pediatric surgery, organ transplantation, orthopedics, urology, cardiothoracic surgery, and neurosurgery.
- Ensure an adequate operative experience in the various areas included in the field of general surgery.
- Ensure an adequate operative experience in the allied disciplines of general surgery, including pediatric surgery, transplant surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery.
- Provide a basic framework of didactic education in all aspects of general surgery.
- Provide an atmosphere that encourages life-long self-directed learning and scholarly activity.
- Provide an atmosphere that stresses holistic aspects of the art and science of medicine.
- Provide opportunities for scholarly activity, whether basic, clinical or outcomes research.
- Produce surgeons who can be the next generation of surgical practitioners, researchers, and surgical leaders.

A Message from the Program Director
As a recent ACGME accredited General Surgery residency program, we are excited to begin accepting applications for our first class to begin July 2017. Our program’s goal is to prepare our residents to practice safe, competent surgical and medical care for patients in all major areas of general surgery. Our philosophy is that you will leave Jersey Shore University Medical Center with a solid foundation in general surgery which will prepare you for board certification and to practice as a general surgeon or pursue subspecialty training.
Our faculty is the cornerstone of our program. We have faculty across 17 service lines who are board certified, active in scholarly activity and experienced teachers that cover all aspects of general surgical education. Residents work under the guidance and supervision of our dedicated faculty to provide state of the art medical care to our ethnically, culturally and economically diverse patient population. Faculty have published multiple peer-reviewed articles, lead major clinical trials and are involved in many research projects that residents may choose to participate in. Quality improvement and patient safety is a major focus of the department with both faculty and resident involvement in quality improvement committees and projects.
With approximately 14,000 surgeries performed in 13 state-of-the-art operating rooms annually, our patient volume and variety is on par with major medical centers throughout the United States. As the only Level II Trauma Center for the region, residents have access to more than 1,600 adult and pediatric trauma patients. In addition, our Center for Robotic Surgery is equipped with the latest da Vinci Surgical System that provides residents with the opportunity to become certified in the use of specialized computer assisted minimally invasive surgical techniques.
The program prides itself on being able to offer complete training at Jersey Shore University Medical Center with the exception of the required transplant experience that will be obtained at nearby Hackensack University Medical Center. Utilizing a team-based approach, residents will rotate through all areas of general surgery including Colorectal, Critical Care, ENT, Endocrine, Gastrointestinal, Gynecologic, Hepato-biliary & Pancreatic, Oncology, Orthopedic, Pediatric, Plastic, Thoracic, Urologic, and Vascular. Additional time is spent in adult and pediatric trauma. The curriculum follows the SCORE standard and is supplemented with multi-disciplinary conferences, tumor boards, M & M, specialty conferences, journal club, and Grand Rounds. Residents receive protected time to attend all required didactics.
