There’s nothing like a frozen treat in the summertime, but what about frozen honey? A new trend has taken off on TikTok where users are freezing honey and filming themselves taking a big bite.

Trends and challenges go viral all the time on the video-sharing platform, some of which have posed health risks for the participants like the “Benadryl challenge” or the “skull breaker challenge”. But what about the #FrozenHoneyChallenge, is this dangerous?

We connected with internal medicine specialist, Laura Tavarez, M.D., to understand if there are any risks with this frozen honey craze.

Is it safe to eat frozen honey?

Overall, if you’re interested in participating in this latest challenge, yes, it is safe. However there are a few caveats.

“Like all things, moderation is key. Eating anything in excess is not advised,” Dr. Tavarez notes. “Honey is high in sugar and calories. In the short term, you may experience stomach cramping, diarrhea or bloating. One small bite won’t cause harm, but let’s say you ingest the whole bottle or do try this multiple times, that’s a different story.”

Long term impacts of high sugar intake can result in:

  • weight gain
  • heart disease
  • cancer
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • liver disease
  • tooth decay
  • acne
  • skin ageing
  • mood disorders like anxiety and depression
  • insomnia

“To all of the parents, please be aware of what your child is participating in online. There are safe and fun ways to engage in these kinds of activities, but guided supervision is important to make sure no one gets hurt,” concludes Dr. Tavarez.
