Alexis Kahanu, M.D., M.B.A.
College: Tufts University School of MedicineGraduation Year: 2023
PGY: PGY 2
EM Interests: Health tech, international medicine
Why I Chose HUMC: I enjoy the fast pace and medically complex patients we see daily! You rarely see patients who just need a ‘quick fix’ such as an ingrown toenail or simple I&D. Instead you’re thrown in to the deep end, with immunocompromised cancer patients, STEMIs, and intubations from day 1. It’s a good thing we have weekly simulations to help us stay prepared. Through all the challenges, we also have amazing faculty and co-residents; we are truly a family that looks out for each other. Hackensack also allows me to explore both my interests – we’re close to NYC where there is a thriving health tech community and have an opportunity in our third year to experience working in a more resource limited setting (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands)
Fun Fact: Despite living in NYC right next to a subway, I’ll still drive (and fight for parking) when meeting up with friends in other parts of Manhattan! Still trying to adjust to the city life 🙂
